Is it worth it to get a membership to Sams Club?
thatlittlegirly asked:
I dont eat much, and I live alone, but I cant afford to pay $12 for a small thing of berries, or $8 for a bag of grapes at the grocery store, its crazy. Can you buy fruits and vegetables in bulk at Sams Club? Would it be cheaper to shop there?

Can you shop around before you decide if you want a membership, or do you have to have a card to get in? I just cant afford to pay $40 for a membership card and then end up not using it.

Unless you’re shopping for a larger family, it isn’t worthwhile. Yes, you DO buy things in bulk there, but how are you going to eat it all by yourself? I’m not sure what grocery store you’re shopping at, but Kroger, Tom Thumb and Walmart have strawberries for $1.50-$2.00/carton and the blueberries/raspberries are about 2 for $5… grapes are about $1.39-$1.69/lb, so 1 person doesn’t need $8 worth! …. try finding a Farmer’s market……

You can shop at Sam’s without a card, but they will charge you 20% on your bill.

For what you are describing, I don’t think it would be worth it. I have a Sam’s membership. I don’t buy the fruits & veg because the pkgs. are to big for us. I buy the meats & then put them in sm pkgs. & freeze them.

You can get produce for great prices, but it’s a lot and you have to eat it before it goes bad. This can be a good thing, because it definitely gets you eating more fruits and veg, but ultimately not necessarily more economical. I think kroger stores are best. I don’t recommend walmart; their produce is pretty gross. Another idea, if you like to do organic, is to sign up with an organic farm for a weekly produce box. You can split this with another one or two single people, it’s very economical and of course great quality food. Just do a search for your region and organic produce box, something like that.

It is not worth it. That is for people that have a big family. You should do your grocery shopping at a cheap store such as Food co or winco’s. They have good deals . Chek them out.

You can find a directory of farm markets for your state here:
I think as another poster said, you could get stuff cheaper to freeze in smaller portions. There is work involved though as you would have to repackage a lot of stuff. Fresh fruits & veggies come in large sizes so you’d have to eat them up quick.
Sometimes Sam’s club and Costco will let you have a day pass to try it out and see whether you’d like to join. When you stop by, go to the service counter and ask them if you can get one to try them out so you can judge for yourself.
We like Costco for stuff other than just food - we’ve gotten good deals there on furniture, appliances, computer stuff, electronics, bedding, tableware, patio stuff - you name it. Oh, and liquor too!

It wouldn’t be worth it for you, unless you’re interested in more than food (clothing, electronics, cleaning supply) since the packages are over sized.
For instance –buying meat, school-juices and frozen veggies, french fries and other frozen foods is what we do, because we fill up the chest-freezer.
We rarely buy fresh produce, because it’s to much for us to finish ,before it would spoil.
You can get in to Sam’s with a Guest-Pass and look around. Go see what you think of the prices and selection they offer and decide if it’s what you need.
If you have an Aldi in your neighbourhood, you can get great deals on everything. A cart full of food will only cost you a third of the price you would pay at any other grocery store.

No, not unless you are buying in bulk, or for a large group (Church or service organization). Thanks
