Sow Love…….
“The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life; but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.Hatred strirreth up strifes; but love covereth all sins”.( Prov. 10:11-12 )
Respected members of the board of judges, my fellow orators, friends, ladies and gentlemen:
Picture in your mind the building of the Tower of Babel of Biblical times. Reflect for a moment the frenzied activities of a group of men, possessed with an obsession of great engineering power and skill, clumsily groping for a way to understand each other so they can succed in building a gigantic edifice that shall link their lowly Earth to God’s Heavenly Abode. The men and their overly ambitious plans failed to materialize simply because man has an innate fear of his fellowmen–a fear that grows out of his own selfish ambitions and pride. These men of Babel were not honest with themselves and sincere in their efforts to understand and coordinate in realizing the great task, the idealistic Tower that is worthy of their inspired goal.
I would not like to compare the efforts of our goverment institutions and even the internationally acclaimed organizations of nations with the vain attempts to construct a Tower of Babel. But I wish to point out the “Babel of differences” that keep our political leaders, our national and international organizations in an unhealthy state of tension, for the relationships that they keep among themselves is but “apparent”—– dictated more by the necessity of self-preservation than by a sincere gesture of symbiosis-more like the wild animals of the forest that warily watch each other and wait and hope that in some unguarded moment, one of them would drop its guard and fall an easy prey to their killing instincts.
The United Nations, for example, organized from the shadow of the defunct League of Nations, is composed of nations nurtured in different customs, traditions, and religions, fostering different ideologies, idiosyncracies and school of thoughts. And the men representing the different nations, possess different idealism and shrewdness-something that keeps them unbending and even indecisive in the face of rivalries and endless debates, proud of their power, callous in their quest for material gain and unreasonable with their greed. Thus, in the 1960’s the 11 nation security council of UN failed to reach a solution to the seroius problems of Congo-then in disarray of bloodshed and chaos. In the face of these shortcomings how can we put our faith in its capacity to attain an “enduring” world peace?
The only hope is “to yield” to the task of working for the greatest good. Abstain from the vile temptation of greed for power and supremacy, envy and pride for material gain. Every nation, every individual should endeavor to attain the much higher and nobler strata of human order through LOVE that gives way to peace and goodwill toward all men.
Remember the purity of love given to us thousands of years ago? It was heaven-sent through the Babe of Bethlehem. In its sublime meaning it is an offering of peace and goowill, a demonstration of honesty of purpose, a tenderly forgiving nature of those who deserve forgiveness, and an instrument to overcome the barriers to unity.
What then is love? When I was a girl, I throught love was my obedience to my parents and my ardent desire to please them. Then as a young lady, I thought it was happiness, contentment, and everything that is pleasant. Now I know, these are but the trimmings of the real thing: loving one another.
If there is love it banishes fear of everything that is ungodly; to the missionary who disregarded the comforts of life and faces unafraid the inevitable, love opens a new horizon of happiness and contentment, a new way of life in the wilderness of the African jungles, among the Congolese people or in the hinterlands of Mindanao.
Love makes the difference. It separates those who are saved from those who are lost. It is the passport to Peace of the world, to the eternal life and kind deeds we shall never have peace and happiness.
Let the talk of love silence the debates that endanger unity, put futile the plan of aggression and make war a thing of the past.
Let us then talk of love until every individual shall have a share of its sublime meaning, until every family shall feel its wonderful warmth, until all the people in the community and the nation shall keep it as their guideposts for action, and untill the entire world shall make it as its way of life.
Love one another! Be kind to one another. Be forgiving to one another. Be tenderhearted to one another. Be thoughtful to one another’s needs. Forget one another’s fault.
Is this too much to ask for the sake of peace?
