South American Literature

What is it about South American writers that makes them unique and fascinating at the same time?

For those of you that have read Sabato, Cortazar, Saramago,Borges, Llosa or Marquez I congratulate you, since you have probably been mesmerized by their work. I strongly believe that their writing is deeply influenced (perhaps more than European, American or Asian authors) by the national spirit. Let us not forget that we are talking about a land forged in centuries long battles, tormented by poverty, savage conquerings and a tradition that keeps on defining them as an united people, whether from Argentina, Peru, Caribbean or Brazil.

I must admit I have never traveled to Latin America, but I have been taken to this magical land by the the stories told by their most prized spokesmen. These stories are partly born from cruel reality, but their true strength is drawn from myths, legends and dreams. This is what unites all them into one beautiful tale about the escape to tradition, to the fantasies of the elderly. Life pulsates strongly for those that never knew peace, nor wellbeing; for the restless and the ones forced to prove their bravery and defend their identity. It is out of this long going pain that the novels such as “The double”(Saramago), ‘Secret weapons”(Cortazar) and “Sweet company”(Laura Restrepo) saw the light of day. These writings and the heart of their authors represent a testimonial of one single voice, that of the Latin Americas. The spirit of a country is reflected by the spirit of its greatest writers. The passion and vigour that breathes through their words is surpassed soley by the beautiful art of crafting a world ruled by imagination and fables.
