Free World of Warcraft Short Stories to Read Online

If you’re a World of Warcraft fan (addict), then you probably find yourself reading about it even when you can’t play (i.e. at work!).  If you’re bored of playing with the talent calculators and reading the same old forum posts over and over, you might head out onto the Web and check out some WoW short stories.

As with popular video games, television shows, books, etc., the fan base has created a wide variety of fan fiction.  As you might expect, some of it isn’t all that hot (hey, if we were all brilliant writers, we’d be selling our novels to the big publishing houses and raking in the authorial bucks), but you might be surprised at some of the enjoyable stories you can find out there.  If you game on a role-playing server, you might just find some short stories authored by fellow guild mates (or even familiar faces from the enemy faction).

Some people write about the dungeon exploits of their high level characters while others take you to familiar places such as the inns and auction houses of Stormwind and Silvermoon.  And I’m sure you can find more than one tale that focuses on the PvP battlefields and arenas.

I’ll get you started with a couple links to World of Warcraft short story sites.  If you’re looking for more, just head over to your favorite search engine and type in WoW or “World of Warcraft” fan fiction.

FanFiction.Net

One of the oldest and largest fan fiction sites out there, FanFiction.Net has just about everything you can imagine (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Star Trek… check!) including WoW stories.  As I write this, they have 77-odd pages you can browse through.  Some are complete shorts stories and some are novel chapters.  Check the reviews to get an idea of how good they are before you read.

Official World of Warcraft Short Stories at WoWWiki

If you prefer to read stories from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, you may prefer tales that have been published on Blizzard’s site, in source books, and in player guides.  The WoWWiki has links to just about everything that falls into that category.  At the bottom of the page, you can also find links to the official novels, which were penned and published by experienced science fiction and fantasy authors.

These links are just a hopping off point for those looking to immerse themselves in a little WoW short story action.  And who knows… maybe you’ll be inspired and decide to write the tale of your own online adventures!

The author is an on-again-off-again WoW player, an internet business owner, and a wannabe novelist. Her short stories don’t take place in the Warcraft world, but they do feature a pair of snarky goblin heroes with a love for tinkering (goblin engineering!) and getting into trouble.
