A List of the Few Surviving Good Magazines

Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone magazine gets a bit of flack for staying so staunchly stuck in the liberal 70s past. Nearly every issue of Rolling Stone has a left-leaning political article about how Bush sucks or Sarah Palin sucks or how amazing Obama is. Whatever, that’s what their history is about and I can respect that, but it would be nice to have a little balance. Nevertheless, Rolling Stone has shown some ability to change in its recent move from the large, oversized newsprint paper style that it has come in since the beginning to the more modern style magazine size. Also, the writers and editors have done a good job of not just hopping on whatever bands the blogs are talking about but have done their own digging into new and exciting bands.

GQ

GQ is one of those magazines that is more than half full of ads, but that’s OK, because if that is what needs to happen to keep them afloat than more power to them. Despite often be labeled as a metro-guys magazine, GQ regularly publishes in depth and intelligent articles about economics, lifestyle and music, as well as having lots of entertaining articles about men’s lifestyle stuff without falling prey to the uninspired type man-magazine stuff like chicks and drinking beer while sitting on a wooden bar stool like some of the Maxim type stag-mags.

Esquire

Similar to GQ, but with a little less focus on men’s lifestyle products and information, Esquire is a bit more pop culture, with lots of great, intelligent celebrity interviews and stories as well as sections dedicated to music, movies and general arts. Like most magazines today, Esquire can sometimes fall prey to cover photo shock tactics like putting a naked Adam Lampert on the cover or something to court controversy and sales, but mostly they are pretty respectable and hopefully they don’t go the way of the Dodo like many other magazines.
